Call for Papers

The growing global concern over waste management, illegal dumping, and environmental pollution underscores the pressing need for intelligent and effective monitoring systems. Recent progress in computer vision, driven by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, offers promising opportunities to address these challenges. Nevertheless, the current literature highlights several open research issues, including the need for more robust detection methods adaptable to diverse environments, the scarcity of comprehensive datasets and benchmarks, and the development of real-time solutions deployable on systems with limited computational resources.

The International Workshop on Smart Waste Monitoring (WasteVision) aims to offer a dedicated forum where researchers, practitioners, and industry representatives can present and discuss innovative contributions in this emerging field. The workshop seeks to advance the state of the art in smart waste monitoring, illegal dumping detection, and environmental pollution surveillance, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Submission Guidelines

Regular papers exceeding five pages are invited. Manuscripts must comply with the same formatting guidelines as the main conference, and accepted papers will be published in the proceedings alongside those of the main conference. The peer-review process is managed through the Microsoft CMT service, provided free of charge by Microsoft, which covers all associated costs, including Azure cloud services, software development, and support.

IWDD CONTEST 2027

SECOND EDITION

The WasteVision workshop welcomes scientific papers describing the methods and results developed within the Illegal Waste Dumping Detection Contest, an international competition devoted to advanced methods for real-time illegal waste dumping detection in videos acquired by fixed CCTV cameras and deployable on smart cameras or embedded systems.

Participants are granted access to the MIVIA-IWDD dataset, a perfectly balanced collection of 500 videos: 250 positive samples, evenly split between static and dynamic disposal, and 250 negative samples featuring challenging scenarios without any dumping event. Each positive video is annotated with the exact instant at which the illegal waste dumping occurs. Submitted methods are evaluated on a private test set and ranked according to the F1-Score, with GPU memory consumption adopted as a secondary criterion whenever two or more methods achieve comparable results.

The aim is to foster innovative solutions that remain reliable across real application scenarios of varying difficulty, promoting algorithms suitable for practical deployment in smart city surveillance systems.
